A little routine care can improve starting reliability and help an automotive battery deliver a longer, safer service life.
What a car battery does
The battery supplies the energy needed to start the engine and supports electrical equipment when required. Once the engine is running, the charging system replenishes the battery. A weak battery, charging fault or poor connection can produce similar symptoms, so testing is better than guessing.
Simple monthly checks
- Inspect the case for swelling, cracks or leaks. Stop using a damaged battery and seek professional help.
- Check that the battery is secured firmly. Movement and vibration can damage internal parts and connections.
- Look for white, blue or green corrosion around the terminals. Have heavy corrosion cleaned safely.
- Make sure the terminal connections are tight. Do not place metal tools across both terminals.
- Notice whether the engine cranks more slowly than usual, especially in the morning.
Habits that protect the battery
Switch off lights and accessories before leaving the vehicle. If the car is used only for very short trips, the alternator may not fully replace the energy used to start the engine. Occasional adequate driving time, where safe and appropriate, helps the charging system do its work.
When a vehicle will remain unused for a long period, ask a qualified technician whether a suitable maintainer is appropriate. Never charge a battery with equipment that is incompatible with its type.
When to test or replace it
Arrange a battery and charging-system test when starting becomes slow, electrical equipment behaves unusually, the battery warning light remains on, or the battery repeatedly loses charge. Age alone does not prove failure, but older batteries deserve more frequent testing.
Safety
Batteries can produce explosive gas and contain corrosive material. Keep sparks and flames away, use eye protection during service and follow the vehicle and battery manufacturers’ instructions. For replacement, match capacity, dimensions, terminal orientation and required technology.
